  • Holishkes – Stuffed Cabbage Rolls
  • Stuffed cabbage rolls, a blend of sweet, sour and savory flavors, are popping up everywhere from diners and delis to five-star restaurants. They are the new mac-and-cheese, but comfort food with a healthful twist, warming the cockles of your heart, while warding off heart disease. Many countries lay claim to its origins, which accounts for the several interesting riffs on the traditional recipe. • Jewish cabbage rolls (called holishkls, a concoction of ground beef, rice and raisins enveloped in cabbage leaves and simmered in a sauce of brown sugar, lemon and tomatoes) have been traced back 2,000 years to Eastern Europe. They were served in celebration of the fall festival, particularly Simchat Torah, which marks a new Torah cycle. The dish is believed to have originated in the ancient Middle East where it spread to Eastern Europe as trade routes flourished and various ethnic groups migrated.
  • Serendipitously, cabbage rolls became ensconced in Scandinavian cuisine when Sweden’s King Charles XII brought the recipe back to his homeland after fleeing to Moldavia in the Ottoman Empire in the early 18th century on a military mission. Today the Swedes celebrate Kåldolmens dag (Day of the Cabbage Roll) in late November to commemorate the anniversary of King Charles’ death, serving the Kåldolmar delight with boiled potatoes and lingonberry jam.
  • Romanian sarmale combines ground pork, caramelized onions and rice nestled in a pickled sauerkraut leaf, and then smothered in dill and tomato sauce. It is often topped with bacon or smoked sausage.
  • Poland’s golabki, translating to “little pigeon feet” (named after the French dish that wrapped cabbage around cooked pigeon), stuffs the leaves with pork, beef, rice or barley, accompanied by sour cream and sweet paprika.
  • Ukrainian holubtsi are typically vegetarian, filling pickled cabbage leaves with either buckwheat and wild mushrooms or a mixture of whole grains and root vegetables, braised in tomato juice or vegetable stock served with perogies.
  • Egyptian mahshi kromb are simmered in an aromatic tomato-based sauce with mint, cumin and other Middle Eastern herbs and spices.
  • The Asian variation wraps Chinese cabbage around seafood blends, tofu and shiitake mushrooms....

  • Cheeseburger French Fry Casserole
  • Of all the great ways to eat potatoes, the french fry just might be the best. There’s nothing quite like those crispy fried edges and the smell of the deep-fryer, or the way each individual fry finds the perfect balance of salt and fat. Despite how unhealthy you know they are, you can never stop at just one. Fries can be jazzed up with fancy toppings or inhaled from a paper bag of greasy fast food. French fries are downright addictive and the perfect food for almost any occasion: a side at a cookout, a midday snack or a late-night wine session. Those perfectly cooked potatoes are more than just an iconic American food; they’re eaten all over the world. Even in countries where you can’t find a McDonald’s, you can probably get your hands on some french fries. The Brits eat their chips thick-cut with salt and malt vinegar, Canadians eat theirs drenched in brown gravy, and Belgians eat fries dipped in mayonnaise. No matter what your condiment of choice is, you probably haven’t stopped to think or learn about what is one of the world’s favorite foods. There are a lot of things about fries you may not know....

  • Lace Patterned Coffee Table
  • Lace can be made in two ways, by hand and by machine. It has the open weblike pattern made by using the thread or yarn. The delicate fabric can be made from various threads such as silver, silk, linen and gold. The cotton thread is mostly applied to create lace today. However, the usage of silk and linen threads is still applied. The synthetic fiber is generally used as the primary material for the manufactured lace. The thread is not always employed by the artists to create unique lace. Some modern artists apply the silver wire or copper wire to create lace....

  • Owl Pretzels
  • Owls are intriguing birds that easily capture the attention and curiosity of birders. These facts may help clear up a bit of their mystery and reveal what a hoot owls really are. Many owl species have asymmetrical ears. When located at different heights on the owl’s head, their ears are able to pinpoint the location of sounds in multiple dimensions. Ready, aim, strike. The eyes of an owl are not true “eyeballs.” Their tube-shaped eyes are completely immobile, providing binocular vision which fully focuses on their prey and boosts depth perception. Owls can rotate their necks 270 degrees. A blood-pooling system collects blood to power their brains and eyes when neck movement cuts off circulation. A group of owls is called a parliament. This originates from C.S. Lewis’ description of a meeting of owls in The Chronicles of Narnia. Owls hunt other owls. Great Horned Owls are the top predator of the smaller Barred Owl....

  • A house cat’s genome is 95.6 percent tiger, and they share many behaviors with their jungle ancestors, says Layla Morgan Wilde, a cat behavior expert and the founder of Cat Wisdom 101. These behaviors include scent marking by scratching, prey play, prey stalking, pouncing, chinning, and urine marking. Cats are believed to be the only mammals who don’t taste sweetness. Cats are nearsighted, but their peripheral vision and night vision are much better than that of humans. Cats are supposed to have 18 toes (five toes on each front paw; four toes on each back paw). Cats can jump up to six times their length. Cats’ claws all curve downward, which means that they can’t climb down trees head-first. Instead, they have to back down the trunk. Cats’ collarbones don’t connect to their other bones, as these bones are buried in their shoulder muscles. Cats have 230 bones, while humans only have 206. Cats have an extra organ that allows them to taste scents on the air, which is why your cat stares at you with her mouth open from time to time. Cats have whiskers on the backs of their front legs, as well. Cats have nearly twice the amount of neurons in their cerebral cortex as dogs. Cats have the largest eyes relative to their head size of any mammal. Cats make very little noise when they walk around. The thick, soft pads on their paws allow them to sneak up on their prey — or you....

  • Turn Dollar Store Coffee Filters Into A Heart Shaped Valentine's Wreath
  • The average heart is the size of a fist in an adult. Your heart will beat about 115,000 times each day. Your heart pumps about 2,000 gallons of blood every day. An electrical system controls the rhythm of your heart. It’s called the cardiac conduction system. The heart can continue beating even when it’s disconnected from the body. The first open-heart surgery occurred in 1893. It was performed by Daniel Hale Williams, who was one of the few black cardiologists in the United States at the time. The first implantable pacemaker was used in 1958. Arne Larsson, who received the pacemaker, lived longer than the surgeon who implanted it. Larsson died at 86 of a disease that was unrelated to his heart. The youngest person to receive heart surgery was only a minute old. She had a heart defect that many babies don’t survive. Her surgery was successful, but she’ll eventually need a heart transplant. The earliest known case of heart disease was identified in the remains of a 3,500-year-old Egyptian mummy. The fairy fly, which is a kind of wasp, has the smallest heart of any living creature. The American pygmy shrew is the smallest mammal, but it has the fastest heartbeat at 1,200 beats per minute. Whales have the largest heart of any mammal. The giraffe has a lopsided heart, with their left ventricle being thicker than the right. This is because the left side has to get blood up the giraffe’s long neck to reach their brain....

  • Turn An Empty Folger's Coffee Can Into A "We Are Going To Disney World" Piggy Bank
  • Though her popularity waned a bit in the 1930s, Minnie Mouse has been around just as long as Mickey. In fact, they share the same birthday. While Walt Disney famously reminded us that “It was all started by a mouse”, we would argue that Mickey wouldn’t be who he is today if it weren’t for his better half. Here are nine fun facts you may not have known about the mouse behind the mouse. “Minnie” May or May Not Be Short for Another Name....Much like Mickey, there is some dispute as to whether or not Minnie is short for another moniker. The comic strip The Gleam — which was briefly published from January 1942 to May of that same year — originally referred to Minnie as Minerva Mouse. More recently, the Mickey Mouse television series that ran from 2013 to 2019 featured an episode (episode 14 of season 4, to exact) in which Mickey refers to his sweetheart as “Minifred”. She Has Two Pets....While it may be more commonly known that Minnie has a pet cat named Figaro — who originally appeared in Pinocchio — she also has a pet dog as well. Fifi, her prize-winning Pekingese, often serves as a love interest for Pluto. She is perhaps best known for Pluto’s Quin-puplets, a 1937 short in which she leaves Pluto to tend to their litter of pups while she goes out for food. Pluto was Originally Her Dog....Pluto has become Mickey’s loyal pooch and best friend, but it wasn’t always that way. When the character first debuted in 1930’s The Chain Gang, he served as a bloodhound tracking down an escaped Mickey. At that time, he didn’t even have a name. Shortly thereafter, he appeared in The Picnic as Minnie’s dog Rover. The character quickly evolved into Pluto, named after the planet (that’s no longer a planet), which was named by an 11-year-old girl shortly before Disney capitalized on the popularity of the galactic discovery....
